How this calculator works
The Devine 1974 equation gives an adult reference mass historically used in drug dosing. It assumes a medium frame and applies here only to heights of at least 60 inches, excluding pregnancy. Despite its common name, ideal weight is not a personalised healthy weight or a prescription. Do not use this calculator to set a drug dose. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
Male reference kg = 50 + 2.3 x (height in inches - 60). Female reference kg = 45.5 + 2.3 x (height in inches - 60). Pounds = kg / 0.45359237.
Worked example
At 70 inches the male equation gives 73.0 kg, about 161 lb. At 64 inches the female equation gives 54.7 kg, about 121 lb.
