How this calculator works
Enter a pre-tax amount and choose a province or territory. The calculator applies the general sales tax rates published by the Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Quebec, checked on November 2, 2026. Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon charge only the 5% GST. British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan add their own PST. Quebec applies 5% GST and 9.975% QST to the same pre-tax amount. Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island use HST; the calculator shows the 5% federal part and the provincial part separately. Nova Scotia's HST is 14% from April 1, 2025. These are general rates: zero-rated supplies, exempt supplies, rebates, point-of-sale rebates and special product rates are out of scope.
Formula
Federal part = pre-tax amount x 5%. Provincial part = pre-tax amount x provincial rate. Combined rate = federal rate + provincial rate. Total sales tax = federal part + provincial part. Total = pre-tax amount + total sales tax.
Worked example
A $100 pre-tax service in Ontario has $5 federal HST and $8 provincial HST, for $13 of tax and a $113 total. In Quebec, $200 has $10 GST and $19.95 QST, for a $229.95 total. In Alberta, $100 has $5 GST and a $105 total.
