How this calculator works
Tax years: 2026/27, 2023/24 and 2022/23, each from 6 April to the following 5 April. Enter net chargeable gains after acquisition and disposal costs, allowable losses and relevant reliefs, but before the annual exemption. For an individual, income uses the UK Personal Allowance, including its GBP 100,000 taper. The unused part of the GBP 37,700 basic-rate band determines how much gain receives the lower rate. Ordinary trusts use a flat rate and half the individual annual exemption. This assumes the full standard trust exemption is available; settlements sharing an allowance or special trusts need separate treatment.
Formula
Taxable gains = max(0, net gains - annual exemption). Lower-rate gains = min(taxable gains, max(0, 37,700 - taxable income)). Tax = lower-rate gains x lower rate + remaining gains x higher rate. In 2026/27 the rates are 18% and 24%, with a GBP 3,000 individual exemption.
Worked example
For 2026/27, GBP 32,570 income leaves GBP 20,000 taxable income. A GBP 12,600 gain less GBP 3,000 exemption gives GBP 9,600 at 18%, or GBP 1,728 tax. A GBP 52,600 gain at the same income gives GBP 10,842 tax.
