How this calculator works
The word mil means one thousandth of an inch in a linear measurement. Moving from mils to inches divides the number by exactly 1000. This relationship does not depend on whether the measurement describes a sheet thickness, a clearance or a coating.
Formula
inches = mils / 1000; mils = inches x 1000.
Worked example
A 15 mil film is 0.015 inch thick. A 0.0625 inch sheet is 62.5 mils.
