How this calculator works

The SI prefix micro means 10^-6. One micrometre is therefore 0.000001 m, 0.001 mm or 1000 nm exactly. A micron is the older name for the same length. Enter either side or select another unit to compare a microscope measurement with a drawing dimension.

Formula

nm = um x 1000; um = nm / 1000; mm = um / 1000; inches = um / 25400.

Worked example

A 12.5 um layer is 12500 nm, 0.0125 mm and about 0.000492126 inches. A 250 nm feature is 0.25 um.

Frequently asked questions

Is a micron the same as a micrometre?

Yes. Both names refer to 10^-6 metres.

Is this a micrometer instrument calculator?

It converts lengths. It does not interpret the thimble or sleeve markings on a mechanical micrometer.

How many micrometres make a mil?

Exactly 25.4 um make one thousandth of an international inch.
