How this calculator works

Land is measured with a mix of metric and customary units. The acre is an imperial unit of exactly 43,560 square feet, which is 4,046.8564224 m2. The hectare is exactly 10,000 m2, so one hectare is about 2.47105 acres. The are is 100 m2 and the cent is one hundredth of an acre, a unit still used in parts of India. A square mile is 640 acres, which is how the US public land survey divides land into sections. Converting through square metres keeps all of these exact.

Formula

square metres = value x F(unit), where F is the square-metre size of the chosen unit: acre 4,046.8564224, hectare 10,000, are 100, cent 40.468564224, square foot 0.09290304, square yard 0.83612736, square mile 2,589,988.110336. Acres = square metres / 4,046.8564224. Total price = acres x price per acre.

Worked example

1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m2 = 0.40468564224 ha = 43,560 ft2 = 100 cents. 1 hectare = 10,000 m2 = 2.47105 acres. 10 hectares = 24.7105 acres. 1 square mile = 640 acres. A 50 ft by 100 ft lot is 5,000 ft2, which is 0.114784 acres or about 11.48 cents.

Frequently asked questions

How many acres are in a hectare?

One hectare is 10,000 m2 and one acre is 4,046.8564224 m2, so one hectare is 2.47105 acres. A hectare is therefore about two and a half times an acre.

What is a cent of land?

A cent is one hundredth of an acre, used in land records in southern India and some other regions. One cent is 40.468564224 m2, and 100 cents make one acre.

Why is a square mile 640 acres?

The US public land survey defined a section as one square mile of 640 acres, arranged as 36 one-square-mile sections in a township. The relationship is exact by definition.

Can I use this for a property purchase?

Use it as a check, not as a legal survey. Boundary measurements, rights of way and local conventions can change the area that is actually conveyed. A registered survey and the property documents are the authoritative source.
