How this calculator works
A US liquid gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, or 3.785411784 L. A quart is a quarter of that gallon, or 946.352946 mL, which is also two pints or four cups. The name quart comes from quarter. The imperial quart used in the United Kingdom is larger at 1,136.5225 mL. This page converts US liquid quarts only, and it uses the same fixed ratio for paint, stock, oil and any other liquid.
Formula
quarts = gallons x 4. gallons = quarts / 4. 1 US gal = 4 US qt = 8 US pt = 16 US cups.
Worked example
1 gal is 4 qt. 2.5 gal of paint is 10 qt. A 5 gal pail holds 20 quarts. 6 quarts is 1.5 gal, and 1 quart is 0.25 gal.
