Cat quality of life calculator

Organize observations about your cat's daily comfort and function using the seven HHHHHMM discussion topics. Higher ratings mean better observed function. The total cannot determine treatment or euthanasia, and one serious concern matters regardless of the sum.

Review the individual observations and changes over time with your veterinarian. Severe pain, breathing difficulty, collapse or inability to urinate needs urgent care. There is no decision cutoff on this page.

How this calculator works

The HHHHHMM framework organizes pain, eating, hydration, hygiene, enjoyment, movement and the balance of good and difficult days. This page sums your observations and preserves each rating for discussion. It does not validate your interpretation or apply a published total-score threshold. Keep notes on specific behaviours and changes so the veterinary team can interpret the pattern.

Formula

Observation total = sum of seven ratings, each from 0 to 10. Range: 0 to 70. Lowest rating = minimum of the seven observations. No mathematical total establishes acceptable comfort or makes an end-of-life decision.

Worked example

Seven ratings of 8 total 56, with a lowest rating of 8. Ratings of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 3 and 5 total 38, with a lowest rating of 2. A low comfort rating needs attention even if other areas score well.

Frequently asked questions

Does a high total rule out suffering?

No. Pain, breathing difficulty or another severe problem may be urgent despite strong ratings in other areas.

Can this tell me when to consider euthanasia?

The tool cannot make that decision. Discuss comfort, prognosis, treatment options and the individual cat's daily experience with your veterinarian.

How should I compare different days?

Record observations at a similar time and write down what changed. Consistency and concrete examples are more useful than a total alone.
