Relative frequency calculator

Express a count as a share of the observations. Count mode uses whole observations; reverse calculations can return a non-integer estimate.

How this calculator works

Divide the category count by the total, or reverse that relationship to estimate a missing value. Whole-number inputs represent actual counts; reverse outputs are left unrounded because rounding may change the requested proportion. Table mode takes mutually exclusive categories in the supplied order, so the final cumulative share is one. A zero total cannot define relative frequency.

Formula

relative frequency = count/total; count = relative frequency × total; total = count/relative frequency.

Worked example

Three observations out of 40 give relative frequency 0.075, displayed as 7.5%. Counts 2, 3, 5 have shares 20%, 30% and 50%.

Frequently asked questions

Is relative frequency a theoretical probability?

It is an observed share. It can estimate a probability when the sample and process justify that interpretation.

Why can a reverse count be fractional?

The requested proportion may not correspond to a whole observation at that total.

Does category order matter?

Individual shares are unchanged. Cumulative shares follow the order supplied.
