Minimum and maximum calculator

Paste a list to find its extremes without losing track of where they occurred. Positions start at one in the original entry order.

How this calculator works

The minimum is no larger than any observation and the maximum is no smaller. The tool retains duplicate occurrences when counting extremes, and its table uses the original list positions rather than sorted positions. Negative values and decimals are compared numerically. A singleton or constant list has the same value as both extremes.

Formula

minimum = min(x1,...,xn); maximum = max(x1,...,xn). Extreme counts include every equal occurrence.

Worked example

For 2, -1, 2, -1, the minimum -1 occurs at positions 2 and 4, and the maximum 2 occurs at positions 1 and 3.

Frequently asked questions

Can the minimum be positive?

Yes. Minimum means smallest within the supplied list, not a value below zero.

Why does a constant list have both extremes?

Every observation is simultaneously no larger and no smaller than the others.

Can I find a minimum in an empty list?

No. At least one finite observation is required to define either extreme.
