How this calculator works
The list is ordered by numeric value rather than by the characters in each entry. This places 2 before 10 and negative numbers before positive ones in ascending order. Descending order reverses the comparison. Sorting changes positions but does not remove duplicate observations, change their numeric values or assign tied statistical ranks.
Formula
Ascending order satisfies x(1) ≤ x(2) ≤ ... ≤ x(n). Descending order reverses these inequalities.
Worked example
The list 3, -2, 3, 0 becomes -2, 0, 3, 3. Both occurrences of 3 remain in the four-row result.

Frequently asked questions
Can I enter fractions?
Enter decimal equivalents such as 0.75. The numeric list input does not parse fraction expressions.
Are thousands separators allowed?
No. Commas separate observations: 1,000 is read as two numbers, 1 and 0. Enter 1000 for one thousand.
Is a sorted position the same as a rank?
Not when values tie. This table numbers rows; rank correlations instead average the tied positions.
