How this calculator works
A US refrigeration ton is a cooling capacity, defined as 12000 international-table BTU per hour. It is a heat-removal rate rather than a mass or electrical input rating. Dividing the heat rate by equipment coefficient of performance would estimate electrical power, but no efficiency is assumed in this conversion.
Formula
1 US refrigeration ton = 12000 BTU_IT/h = 3516.852842066667 W = 3.516852842066667 kW.
Worked example
A one-ton cooling capacity is about 3.516853 kW. Two refrigeration tons are about 7.033706 kW and 24000 BTU_IT/h.

Frequently asked questions
Does one ton mean 1000 kg?
Here ton means a refrigeration capacity unit, not a mass.
Is cooling capacity the electricity used?
No. Electrical input depends on efficiency or coefficient of performance.
Why specify US refrigeration tons?
Other historical ton definitions differ. This tool uses the common US 12000 BTU_IT/h definition.
