How this calculator works
A transverse elastic wave travels at a speed set by shear rigidity and density. Use the dynamic modulus at the relevant frequency and conditions when comparing with ultrasonic measurements. This model assumes a uniform, unbounded, isotropic solid; guided waves and anisotropic media need additional information.
Formula
vs = sqrt(G/rho); G = rho vs^2.
Worked example
G = 32 GPa and rho = 8000 kg/m3 give vs = 2000 m/s. A density of 2000 kg/m3 at the same modulus gives 4000 m/s.

Frequently asked questions
Can a liquid carry this wave?
An ordinary liquid has no equilibrium shear rigidity, so it does not carry a bulk elastic shear wave in this model.
Why might measured speed differ?
Texture, porosity, frequency, temperature and the distinction between static and dynamic moduli can all matter.
Is this the longitudinal sound speed?
No. Longitudinal waves depend on bulk stiffness as well as shear stiffness.
