How this calculator works

Density links how much material is present with the space it occupies. Choose a reference only for mass or volume calculations; density mode uses the measured mass and volume. The rectangular option uses the product of three outside dimensions for a solid block. Reference values are rounded and apply only near the stated conditions. For powders, food ingredients, alloys, foams and other mixtures, enter a measured bulk density that matches packing, composition and temperature.

Formula

rho = m/V; m = rho V; V = m/rho; rectangular solid V = length x width x height.

Worked example

At 1000 kg/m3, 2 L has mass 2 kg. A 0.1 m by 0.2 m by 0.3 m solid block at 2700 kg/m3 has volume 0.006 m3 and mass 16.2 kg.

Frequently asked questions

Is mass the same as weight?

Mass is reported in kilograms or other mass units. Gravitational weight is a force, m g.

Can I convert cups to grams?

Yes, if the selected volume unit and density describe your ingredient. Packing can change food bulk density substantially.

Why are there no universal alloy or food densities?

Their composition, voids and preparation vary. Use product data or a measured density for the actual material.
