How this calculator works
Shear modulus is the slope of shear stress versus engineering shear strain in the linear range. Displacement mode estimates strain as lateral shift divided by transverse height. Use small, uniform deformation before yielding. Engineering shear strain is twice the corresponding off-diagonal tensor strain.
Formula
G = tau/gamma = F h/(A x); tau = G gamma; gamma approximately x/h.
Worked example
A shear stress of 20 MPa and strain of 0.00025 imply G = 80 GPa. A 10 MPa stress in the same material produces strain 0.000125.

Frequently asked questions
Is shear modulus Young's modulus?
No. Young's modulus describes axial loading; shear modulus describes distortional loading.
Can strain be an angle?
For small angles the engineering shear strain approximately equals the shear angle in radians.
Can rubber use a constant G?
Only locally. Large rubber deformation generally needs a nonlinear constitutive model.
