LDL calculator

Use the original Friedewald relation for a fasting lipid sample with triglycerides below 400 mg/dL.

How this calculator works

The calculation converts the profile to mg/dL, estimates VLDL cholesterol as one fifth of triglycerides, then subtracts HDL and estimated VLDL from total cholesterol. Other modes rearrange that same relation. Use a fasting sample without chylomicrons; this equation is unsuitable in type III dysbetalipoproteinaemia and may underestimate low LDL. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

In mg/dL: LDL = TC - HDL - TG/5. TC = LDL + HDL + TG/5; HDL = TC - LDL - TG/5; TG = 5(TC - HDL - LDL). SI entries are converted using 38.67 for cholesterol and 88.57 for triglycerides.

Worked example

TC 200, HDL 50 and TG 150 mg/dL give LDL 120 mg/dL. TC 180, HDL 60 and TG 100 give LDL 100. Conversely, TC 200, HDL 50 and LDL 120 imply TG 150.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it at TG 400 mg/dL?

No. This page rejects triglycerides at or above 400 mg/dL, including a triglyceride value obtained by rearranging the equation.

Why not simply divide SI triglycerides by 2.2?

That is a familiar rounded SI form. This tool consistently applies the original mg/dL equation after converting the inputs, so it may differ slightly.

Does this replace the laboratory LDL result?

No. Laboratories may use a different validated equation or a direct assay. A calculated negative LDL is rejected rather than reported as zero.
