How this calculator works

GIR expresses glucose delivery in milligrams per kilogram per minute. A concentration of 10 g/100 mL contains 100 mg/mL. Divide hourly delivery by 60 and by body weight. For simultaneous infusions, add glucose delivery rather than adding concentrations. This is arithmetic for a prescribed regimen, not a suggested starting rate or a glucose-treatment protocol. Clinical teams must assess concentration, route, fluid limits and glucose monitoring separately. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

GIR (mg/kg/min) = concentration (g/100 mL) × rate (mL/h) / [6 × weight (kg)]. For multiple infusions, sum concentration × rate before dividing.

Worked example

At 3 kg, a 10% solution running at 9 mL/h provides 5 mg/kg/min. At 4 kg, 10% at 12 mL/h plus 20% at 6 mL/h provides 10 mg/kg/min.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add two GIR values?

Yes, when both use the same patient weight and run at the same time. The mixture mode calculates each delivery in common units before summing.

Does 10% mean a fraction of 0.10 here?

Enter 10 in the concentration field. It explicitly represents 10 g in each 100 mL, not the engine's fractional percent unit.

Does this recommend an infusion?

No. It checks a known regimen or rearranges its arithmetic. It does not choose an appropriate fluid or glucose target.
