How this calculator works

This tool performs dimensional arithmetic on an already prescribed dose in micrograms/kg/min. Concentration is entered in mg/mL or derived from the drug amount and final bag volume. It reports the exact calculated drop rate and assumes a constant infusion rate. Independent medication checks and the equipment instructions remain necessary. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

mL/h = dose (micrograms/kg/min) × kg × 60 / (concentration in mg/mL × 1000). Concentration = mg in bag / final mL. Drops/min = mL/h × drops/mL / 60.

Worked example

A prescribed 5 micrograms/kg/min for 70 kg with 250 mg in 250 mL gives 21 mL/h. At 20 drops/mL this is 7 drops/min; a full bag lasts about 11.90 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Does it choose a drug dose?

No. Enter a dose and concentration that have already been prescribed and checked.

Why is there a factor of 1000?

The dose is in micrograms, while bag contents and concentration use milligrams. One milligram is 1000 micrograms.

Is bag volume the original diluent volume?

Use the final solution volume specified by the prepared product or pharmacy, including any relevant added volume.
