How this calculator works
Complete an authorised ESS questionnaire first, then transfer each recorded item score in its original order. All eight responses are required. The questionnaire is copyrighted and needs a licence for use; this page supplies arithmetic only. A total alone cannot identify the cause of daytime sleepiness or determine fitness to drive. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
ESS total = item 1 + item 2 + item 3 + item 4 + item 5 + item 6 + item 7 + item 8. Each recorded item is 0, 1, 2 or 3; the total ranges from 0 to 24.
Worked example
Recorded scores 1, 0, 2, 1, 3, 0, 1 and 0 sum to 8. Eight scores of 2 sum to 16.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the questions?
Use the authorised form linked in the sources. Rewording the items would create an unvalidated questionnaire.
Can I leave one item unanswered?
No. Obtain all eight recorded responses before using the total; missing items cannot simply be treated as zero.
Does the total diagnose a sleep disorder?
No. It records reported sleep propensity across the form activities. Persistent sleepiness warrants professional assessment.
