How this calculator works
Each of five clinical or laboratory components contributes 1, 2 or 3 points. The sum is classified A, B or C. This page uses the conventional bilirubin cut-offs, not alternative thresholds used in some cholestatic disorders. Ascites and encephalopathy require professional assessment. Class is a severity description, not a personalised survival probability or a medication decision. A total cannot uniquely recover a missing clinical component. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
Total = bilirubin points + albumin points + INR points + ascites points + encephalopathy points. A = 5 to 6, B = 7 to 9, C = 10 to 15.
Worked example
Five one-point components total 5, class A. Five two-point components total 10, class C. A pattern 1, 2, 2, 1, 1 totals 7, class B.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the class to choose a medicine?
No. Drug-specific labelling, the full clinical assessment and prescriber judgement are required.
Does a total identify the missing component?
No. Different component combinations yield the same total, so no unique inverse exists.
Are ascites and encephalopathy self-assessed?
They should be assessed by a qualified clinician; simple symptom guesses can misclassify the score.
