How this calculator works
Tax year: 2024, traditional IRA owner. Divide the previous December 31 account balance by the IRS factor for ages on birthdays during the distribution year. Use Table II when the sole beneficiary is a spouse more than ten years younger; otherwise use Table III. The 2024 owner starting age is generally 73. This tool does not apply inherited-account rules, Roth-owner exclusions to other account types, delayed employer-plan starts or penalty calculations. Age 120 represents the table's 120-and-over factor.
Formula
RMD = prior December 31 balance / IRS distribution factor. Balance = RMD x factor. The uniform factor at age 73 is 26.5; at 74 it is 25.5.
Worked example
An owner aged 73 with a $265,000 prior year-end balance and the uniform factor 26.5 has a $10,000 RMD. At age 74, a $255,000 balance and factor 25.5 also gives $10,000.

Frequently asked questions
Which balance should I use?
Use the account value as of December 31 of the previous year, with any adjustments required by IRS rules.
Does this apply to an inherited IRA?
No. Inherited accounts have separate beneficiary and timing rules.
Can I withdraw more than the RMD?
Usually yes, but an excess withdrawal does not generally reduce next year's required amount.
