How this calculator works
The holding-period return adds cash income to the change in market value, then divides by the positive opening value. Enter all figures per share or all for the full position. This one-period measure treats distributions as cash received without modelling their reinvestment dates. Fees, tax and annualization are excluded.
Formula
HPR = (ending price - beginning price + income)/beginning price. Capital yield = price change/beginning price; income yield = income/beginning price.
Worked example
A share bought for $100, ending at $110 and paying $5 dividends has a 15% holding-period return. A $100 share ending at $80 with $10 income returns -10%.

Frequently asked questions
Does dividend yield use the current price?
Here it uses the beginning price so that income yield and capital gains yield add exactly to holding-period return.
Are dividends assumed reinvested?
No. Their cash amount is added once. Reinvestment requires dated cash flows or a total-return price series.
Is this a yearly return?
Only if the holding period is exactly one year. Use annualized return to convert another interval.
