Italic text generator

Type or paste text and get the same words in italic Unicode characters. The output is plain text, so it can be pasted into captions, comments and messages that do not offer an italic button.

How this calculator works

Unicode includes a mathematical italic alphabet alongside the ordinary Latin letters. The tool replaces each capital and small letter that has an italic counterpart in that block and copies everything else unchanged. Digits, punctuation, spaces and letters with accents are left alone, because Unicode does not define italic forms for them. The result is text rather than styling, so it keeps its appearance in apps that accept plain text and drops the formatting nowhere, although the receiving font still has to contain the italic characters.

Formula

For each character: A to Z maps to the Unicode mathematical italic capitals starting at U+1D434. a to z maps to the italic small letters starting at U+1D44E, except small h, which Unicode stores separately at U+210E. Other characters are copied unchanged.

Worked example

The word Mathulate becomes an italic string whose capital M is the mathematical italic M and whose h uses the single-storey italic h at U+210E. The character count remains 9 because each replacement is one code point.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the letter h look different from the others?

Unicode assigned the italic small h to the Letterlike Symbols block before the mathematical alphabet was finished, so it lives at U+210E rather than next to its neighbours. The tool uses that character so the output stays consistent with the rest of the alphabet.

Do numbers become italic?

No. Unicode defines no italic digits, so 0 to 9 are copied as ordinary digits. Mixing italic letters with upright digits is the normal appearance for this alphabet.

Will the italic text work in a username?

Most services accept the characters because they are valid Unicode, but some usernames are restricted to basic Latin letters, digits and underscores. Test in the field before committing to a name, and keep a plain-text copy of anything important.

Is this the same as using an italic font?

No. A real italic font is applied by the reader and can be removed or restyled. These are different characters that always look italic, which is why they survive pasting into plain-text places.
