How this calculator works
The calculator adds the routine parts of the day that you cannot use for reading, then scales them by how often they happen and by your playback speed. A day with 65 minutes of dead time, seven days a week, yields 7.58 hours of listening at normal speed. Speeding playback up to 1.25 times raises the same routine to 9.48 hours a week, because a faster narration fits more book into the same clock time. Dividing the listening time by an average book length turns hours into books, which is easier to picture than a total in hours.
Formula
Dead time per day = travel + chores + exercise + other. Weekly dead time = daily x days per week. Listening time per month = weekly x 52 / 12 x playback speed. Listening time per year = weekly x 52 x playback speed. Audiobooks = listening time / average book length.
Worked example
Twenty minutes driving, fifteen on chores, twenty exercising and ten queuing add up to 65 minutes a day. Seven days a week gives 7 hours 35 minutes a week, which is 32.9 hours a month and 394.3 hours a year at normal speed. At 1.25 times speed that is 492.9 hours a year, or about 49 audiobooks of 10 hours each.

Frequently asked questions
Does faster playback really mean more books?
It shortens the clock time needed for each book, so the same dead time covers more titles. The trade-off is comprehension: most listeners handle 1.25 to 1.5 times speed comfortably for fiction, while technical or unfamiliar material often needs normal speed.
Should I count time when I am not alone?
Only count time when you can safely listen and still pay attention to what matters. Driving needs most of your attention, and a podcast or book can distract from traffic. Use the routine, low-risk parts of the day and leave the rest out.
Why does the monthly figure use a 52 week year?
Using 52 weeks and dividing by 12 keeps the monthly and yearly totals consistent, rather than switching between a calendar month and an average month. The difference over a year is small, but the arithmetic stays transparent.
How is the book count rounded?
Books are shown to one or two decimal places, so 49.3 means about 49 full books and a third of another. The calculation keeps full precision and only the display is rounded.
