How this calculator works
A price per litre becomes a price per gallon by multiplying by the number of litres in a gallon. The US gallon and the imperial gallon are different volumes, so two answers are needed: a US gallon is 3.785411784 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres. The page never converts currency. The dollar sign on the result is a display label for the number you entered, so a price typed in euros, pounds or Canadian dollars keeps its own currency meaning.
Formula
price per US gallon = price per litre x 3.785411784. price per imperial gallon = price per litre x 4.54609. In the other direction, price per litre = price per US gallon / 3.785411784.
Worked example
1.50 per litre is 1.50 x 3.785411784 = 5.67812 per US gallon and 1.50 x 4.54609 = 6.81914 per imperial gallon. 2.00 per litre is 7.57082 per US gallon and 9.09218 per imperial gallon.

Frequently asked questions
Which gallon should I use for fuel prices?
The United States uses the US gallon, so use the US gallon row there. The United Kingdom sells fuel by the litre, but if you need an imperial gallon figure for comparison, use the imperial row. Canada sells fuel by the litre.
Does the page convert currencies?
No. It multiplies a price by a volume factor and leaves the currency alone. Mixing currencies needs an exchange rate, which changes constantly and is not part of a volume conversion.
Why do the two gallon prices differ so much?
An imperial gallon is larger than a US gallon by about 20 per cent, so it holds more fuel and costs proportionally more. The ratio between the two gallon prices is always 4.54609 / 3.785411784 = 1.20095.
