How this calculator works
The face area is multiplied by thickness and the selected steel density. The carbon-steel reference is 7850 kg/m3 from Saarstahl; Sanmac 304/304L uses 7900 kg/m3 from Alleima. The calculation excludes rolling tolerances, coatings and attached parts.
Formula
Mass = face area x thickness x quantity x steel density; carbon reference density = 7850 kg/m3; named 304/304L reference = 7900 kg/m3. Circle area = pi x diameter^2 / 4; reverse thickness = mass / (area x quantity x density).
Worked example
A 1 m by 1 m steel plate at 10 mm thickness weighs 78.5 kg at 7850 kg/m3. Two identical plates weigh 157 kg.

Frequently asked questions
Is thickness nominal or measured?
Use measured thickness for a mass check. A nominal mill thickness is useful for ordering estimates but allows manufacturing tolerances.
Can I estimate a painted plate?
This calculation gives the metal mass. Add coating mass separately from the coating coverage or dry-film data.
Does a stainless preset cover every grade?
No. It covers the named 304/304L reference. Enter a custom manufacturer density for another grade.
