How this calculator works
A pipe is an outer cylinder minus its bore. The annular area times length gives material volume; density gives empty-pipe mass. The carbon-steel reference is 7850 kg/m3 and Sanmac 304/304L is 7900 kg/m3. For PVC, iron, copper or another unlisted product, choose custom density from its manufacturer. Nominal trade size is not an actual outside diameter.
Formula
A = pi x (Do^2 - Di^2) / 4; Di = Do - 2t; mass = A x L x density x quantity; kg/m = A x density. For known t, Do = mass / (quantity x density x L x pi x t) + t.
Worked example
One 2 m pipe with 100 mm outside diameter and 60 mm bore has 0.0100531 m3 material volume. At 7850 kg/m3 it weighs about 78.917 kg.

Frequently asked questions
Can I enter nominal pipe size?
Use actual outside diameter and wall thickness from the product table. A nominal 4 in Schedule 40 pipe, for example, is not 4 in outside diameter.
Does this include water inside the pipe?
No. The result is empty-pipe material mass. Add contents, fittings, insulation and coatings separately.
Why reject a wall equal to half the outside diameter?
That leaves no bore. This page models a hollow pipe; use a round-bar calculator for a solid cylinder.
