How this calculator works
Multiply bedding area by the intended layer depth and add the ordering allowance. Bulk density converts order volume to mass and must reflect your supplier material and moisture condition. The starting 1600 kg/m3 is an indicative loose-sand value. Reverse modes treat entered mass as the available order quantity, including the allowance. CMHA guidance commonly uses a nominal 25 mm uncompacted bedding layer for standard installations; follow your project detail.
Formula
net volume = area x depth; order volume = net volume x (1 + allowance); mass = order volume x bulk density; cubic yards = m3 / 0.764554857984.
Worked example
Ten square metres at 30 mm needs 0.3 m3 before allowance. At 1600 kg/m3 it weighs 480 kg. A 320 kg supply over the same area gives 20 mm without allowance.

Frequently asked questions
Is this polymeric jointing sand?
No. Jointing sand depends on joint width, depth and paver geometry. This calculator estimates the bedding layer beneath the pavers.
Does the allowance model compaction?
No. It is an ordering allowance only. Use a depth and supplier density consistent with the specified loose or installed condition.
Can I use tonnes?
Yes. Mass outputs offer metric tonnes. A US short ton is a different quantity and is not the quote basis here.
