How this calculator works
The yield estimate multiplies planted row length by a mass yield per row metre. UMN presets use a midpoint when a mass range is provided and divide bed yields by an explicit number of rows per bed. For example, 300 lb per 100-foot tomato bed with one row becomes about 4.4645 kg per row metre. Crops reported only as bunches, ears or seed-mass ratios, and crops absent from that table, require a local mass-yield input. Weather, cultivar, management and marketable losses can change harvest substantially.
Formula
Harvest mass = number of rows × length per row × yield per row metre. Required length per row = target mass/(rows × yield rate). Approximate area = combined row length × row pitch.
Worked example
At a local rate of 2 kg/m, two 10 m rows yield an estimated 40 kg. A 30 kg target with three rows at the same rate needs 5 m per row. With 1 m row pitch this occupies about 15 m2.

Frequently asked questions
Does the tool guarantee the harvest?
No. The result is a planning estimate from the entered rate. Use local records for similar cultivar and management conditions.
Are the preset yields per row or bed?
The cited source reports bed scenarios. The tool converts each preset to a single-row rate using its stated rows-per-bed assumption.
Is the calculated area exact?
It treats each row as occupying one row pitch. Headlands, access lanes and plot-edge effects require a separate allowance.
