How this calculator works
This layout counts discrete plant centres, including positions exactly on the inner border line. Square rows use the same spacing in both directions; triangular rows use a half-spacing offset; rectangular rows keep a separately entered row gap. The inverse search finds the largest spacing that fits at least the target, so the final count can exceed it. Hedge rows are aligned; their transverse separation and bed width must be planned separately.
Formula
Usable dimensions = outer dimensions - 2 × border. Aligned row count = floor(usable width/row gap) + 1. Plants per aligned row = floor(usable length/plant gap) + 1. Cost = fitted count × price.
Worked example
A 1 m square at 0.5 m spacing with a zero border holds 9 plants. A 3 m hedge with two aligned rows and 1 m spacing holds 8 plants; at $2 each they cost $16.

Frequently asked questions
Does the inverse guarantee exactly my target count?
No. Complete rows and staggered layouts can jump between counts. The result fits at least the target.
Where should crop spacing come from?
Use a seed packet, cultivar guidance or agricultural extension recommendation for your production method. This tool lays out the chosen distance.
Are walkway widths included?
Only if you subtract them before entering the usable bed dimensions. Use the plant population calculator for a field-scale repeating walkway allowance.
