How this calculator works
Area divided by coverage per bale gives the unrounded requirement. Purchase quantity rounds up to full bales. The default 4.645152 m2 is 50 ft2, the example coverage in University of Georgia water-wise landscape guidance at a 5-inch initial depth. This is a reference scenario rather than a universal bale specification; use the coverage and depth for the actual product.
Formula
Bales to buy = ceiling(area/coverage per bale). Covered area = bales × coverage per bale. Cost = whole bales × CAD/bale.
Worked example
If each bale covers 5 m2, a 100 m2 bed requires 20 bales. At $10 each the cost is $200. Twelve bales covering 4 m2 each cover 48 m2.

Frequently asked questions
Is a bale a fixed volume?
No. Compression and bale size differ between products. Compare suppliers at the same installed depth.
Does coverage change with depth?
Yes. A thicker layer covers less area. Use a coverage figure quoted for your planned thickness.
Can this estimate a top-up?
Yes. Use the bale coverage for the additional thickness you need, after measuring existing straw and its condition.
