Football calorie calculator (World Cup edition)

A tournament is a lot of sitting and a lot of snacking. This page estimates the food energy across the matches you watch, the energy spent watching, and the workout needed to balance the difference.

How this calculator works

Match-day food is easy to underestimate because snacks are eaten slowly over a long sitting. This page adds typical energy values for beer, chips, popcorn and pizza across the matches you watch, then subtracts the energy you would burn sitting and watching. The difference is positive when you eat more than you burn. Dividing by the energy cost of running, cycling, playing football or brisk walking gives the time needed to work it off. A kilogram of body fat is treated as about 7,700 kcal, a common approximation rather than a precise conversion.

Formula

Intake = matches x sum of (servings x kcal per serving). Watching burn = watching MET x 3.5 x weight / 200 x minutes. Balance = intake - watching burn. Fat equivalent = balance / 7,700. Burn time = balance / (activity MET x 3.5 x weight / 200).

Worked example

For three two-hour matches with two beers, one bag of chips, one popcorn and two pizza slices per match, intake is 3 x (2 x 215 + 280 + 120 + 2 x 285) = 3 x 1,400 = 4,200 kcal. Watching at 1.5 METs for 80 kg burns 1.5 x 3.5 x 80 / 200 x 360 = 756 kcal. The surplus is 3,444 kcal, about 0.45 kg of fat, and running at 9.8 METs would take about 251 minutes to burn.

Frequently asked questions

Does watching football really burn calories?

Yes. Sitting still already burns close to one MET, and reacting, standing and cheering raise it a little. The effect is small compared with the food, which is why the balance is usually positive.

Can I use this as a diet plan?

No. It is a rough energy balance for a few match days, not a nutrition plan. Body mass also responds to water, glycogen and appetite over longer periods.

Why is the fat equivalent not the same as weight gained?

A 7,700 kcal surplus is approximately the energy in one kilogram of fat, but the body does not store every surplus calorie as fat. Treat the number as a scale for comparison.

What if I do not drink beer?

Set the beer count to zero. The other snacks remain, and you can change the per-match servings to match what you actually eat.
