How this calculator works
Cutting speed is the peripheral speed at the effective cutting diameter. Milling feed multiplies spindle revolutions by effective teeth and feed per tooth. Drilling, reaming, boring, counterboring and turning modes instead use feed per revolution. The presets reproduce selected manufacturer milling starting values, not a universal safe speed or a chip-load recommendation. Enter feed increments from tooling data for the actual diameter, engagement and setup. Open-ended aluminium recommendations use the published lower starting value.
Formula
RPM = 60 vc/(pi D), with vc in m/s and D in m. Milling feed = RPM z fz/60 in m/s. Other selected operations use feed = RPM fn/60.
Worked example
A 10 mm tool at cutting speeds 0.314159 to 0.628319 m/s turns 600 to 1200 rpm. Four teeth with 0.1 to 0.2 mm per tooth give 4 to 16 mm/s feed. At 1000 rpm, two teeth and 0.1 mm per tooth give 3.333333 mm/s.

Frequently asked questions
Why is turning feed independent of tooth count?
The entered feed is per workpiece revolution rather than per tooth. Milling uses effective teeth crossing the cut.
What does the middle result mean?
It uses the arithmetic midpoint speed and midpoint feed increment. It is not an optimized machine setting.
Can I apply a milling preset to drilling?
No. Choose custom data from the tool maker for the specific drilling or turning operation.
