How this calculator works
This near-surface model treats gravity as uniform. Choose a reference level and enter a nonnegative height above it. The energy change depends on height difference, rather than the absolute altitude. Large changes in distance from a planet require the inverse-square gravitational model.
Formula
U = m g h. Rearrange for any one positive factor; a zero known factor cannot determine the other factors uniquely.
Worked example
At g = 10 m/s2, lifting 5 kg by 2 m increases potential energy by 100 J. Lifting it by 4 m gives 200 J.

Frequently asked questions
Where is zero energy?
At the reference height you choose. Only differences affect the work needed.
Can I change gravity?
Yes. Enter a local or planetary acceleration instead of standard Earth gravity.
Is height allowed below the reference?
This tool uses height above a lower reference. Move the reference level if you need a signed energy change.
