How this calculator works
Static equilibrium requires the turning moments about the pivot to cancel. The ideal force advantage equals effort arm divided by load arm. Distances are perpendicular moment arms, which may differ from the physical distance along a tilted bar. The tool neglects bar weight and pivot friction. Include their separate moments in a free-body calculation when they matter.
Formula
Effort × effort arm = load × load arm; mechanical advantage = load/effort = effort arm/load arm.
Worked example
An effort of 100 N acting 3 m from the pivot balances 300 N at a 1 m moment arm, giving advantage 3. A 500 N load at 0.2 m balances a 50 N effort at 2 m.

Frequently asked questions
Must the lever be horizontal?
No. The moment arms must be perpendicular to the forces. The bar can have another orientation.
Can the pivot be between the forces?
Yes. The calculation uses opposing moment magnitudes and does not assign a lever class.
Does a large advantage create work?
No. A larger load force comes with a smaller load displacement in an ideal lever.
