How this calculator works
Weight is mass multiplied by gravitational acceleration. This tool fixes acceleration to the conventional standard value, 9.80665 m/s², rather than the slightly varying local gravity. The numerical conversion also applies to kilogram-force: 1 kgf is defined as 9.80665 N. The force output can be displayed in pounds-force without confusing pounds of mass with force.
Formula
W = m g0; m = W/g0; g0 = 9.80665 m/s²; 1 kgf = 9.80665 N.
Worked example
A 2 kg mass has a standard weight of 19.6133 N. A force of 98.0665 N equals the standard weight of 10 kg.

Frequently asked questions
Are kilograms and newtons interchangeable?
No. A gravity convention is required because mass and force are different physical quantities.
Will this work on the Moon?
Use the force calculator with lunar gravitational acceleration instead of this standard-gravity conversion.
What is kilogram-force?
It is a force unit defined as the standard weight of one kilogram, exactly 9.80665 N.
