How this calculator works
Conductivity measures how readily current flows for a given field, while resistivity measures the field needed for a given current density. Their reciprocal relation uses bulk material properties, independent of sample length and area. Reference metals are approximate room-temperature values from the cited textbook. Purity, processing and temperature affect measured results; custom measurements should use the direct conversion.
Formula
rho = 1/sigma and sigma = 1/rho, with rho in ohm m and sigma in S/m.
Worked example
A conductivity of 5 S/m gives resistivity 0.2 ohm m. A resistivity of 0.25 ohm m gives conductivity 4 S/m.

Frequently asked questions
Can I enter zero conductivity?
It represents an ideal insulator with infinite resistivity, so there is no finite result.
Why does resistance also depend on size?
Resistance is rho L/A. Resistivity is a bulk property; resistance also includes the geometry.
Are the metal presets exact?
No. They are approximate values at 20 °C, useful for estimates rather than replacing material measurements.
