How this calculator works
A student normally moves up one grade for each school year, so a known grade anchors the whole timeline. Kindergarten counts as level zero, grade 1 as level one, and so on to grade 12 at level twelve. Moving forward one school year adds one level and moving back subtracts one. The target year is interpreted as the calendar year in which that school year begins, which in most of Canada and the United States is the September of the autumn term. A target before kindergarten is reported as before school, and a target after grade 12 is reported as after high school. The timeline stops at grade 12; the expected graduation year is the spring after grade 12 begins.
Formula
grade level = starting level + (target year - starting year), where kindergarten is 0 and grade 12 is 12. The school year label runs from the target year to the following year. Expected graduation year = starting year + 13 - starting level.
Worked example
A student in grade 6 when the 2000-2001 school year began is at level 6. In 2005 the level is 6 + (2005 - 2000) = 11, so the student was in grade 11 during the 2005-2006 school year, five years after the starting point. In 1998 the level is 6 - 2 = 4, so the student was in grade 4. In 2015 the level is 21, which is after high school. The expected graduation year is 2000 + 13 - 6 = 2007.

Frequently asked questions
Does the school year start in the year I enter?
Yes. Enter the calendar year in which the school year began. A grade 6 year that ran from September 2000 to June 2001 is entered as 2000, and the page labels the target school year with the starting calendar year.
What if the student skipped or repeated a grade?
The timeline assumes one grade per year. A skipped grade moves every later grade one year earlier, and a repeated grade moves them one year later. Enter a more recent grade and year if you know one, so the anchor reflects the real progression.
Why can the result be before school or after high school?
The arithmetic does not stop at the edges of school. If the target year is before kindergarten, the level is negative and the page says before school. If it is after grade 12, the level is above twelve and the page says after high school. This keeps the answer honest instead of forcing it into a grade.
Is the graduation year the same as the end of grade 12?
The grade 12 school year begins in one calendar year and ends in the next. Graduation is normally in the spring of the second year, so the graduation year is one more than the year grade 12 began. The table shows the year each grade begins, not the year it ends.
