How this calculator works
A student in grade 12 during a school year graduates at the end of that year, in the following spring. A student in grade 9 has three more years after the current one, so the graduation year is the start year plus four. The same rule works for every grade: graduation year = school year start + 12 - current grade + 1. Kindergarten counts as grade 0, so a kindergarten student starting in 2026 graduates in 2039 after thirteen school years. The reverse mode subtracts the years already elapsed from grade 12.
Formula
graduation year = school year start + (12 - current grade) + 1. School years remaining = graduation year - school year start. Reverse: current grade = 13 - (graduation year - school year start). Kindergarten is grade 0 and grade 12 is grade 12.
Worked example
A student in grade 9 when the 2026-2027 school year begins graduates in 2026 + (12 - 9) + 1 = 2030, with four school years remaining. A student in grade 12 in the same year graduates in 2027. Going the other way, a graduation year of 2033 with the school year starting in 2026 gives a current grade of 13 - (2033 - 2026) = 6.

Frequently asked questions
Does the school year start in September?
Enter the calendar year in which the school year begins. In most of Canada and the United States that is the September of the autumn term, even though the year ends in the following calendar year. A school on a different calendar should still use the year the final school year starts.
What if the student skips or repeats a grade?
The calculation assumes one grade per year. A skipped grade moves graduation one year earlier and a repeated grade moves it one year later. Adjust the current grade or the school year start to match the student actual progression.
Is kindergarten included?
Yes, as grade 0. A kindergarten student needs thirteen school years to reach the end of grade 12 in the common kindergarten-to-grade-12 system. Some jurisdictions start with a pre-kindergarten year or end after grade 11, which shifts the answer.
When exactly does graduation happen?
The ceremony is usually in the spring of the graduation year, at the end of the final school year. The year reported here is the calendar year of that spring, not the year the school year began.
