Tip calculator

Enter the bill, the tip percentage you want to leave and the number of people sharing it. The page shows the tip, the total including the tip, and what each person owes. It also shows the tip share separately, so a group can split the service fairly even when one person paid the bill.

How this calculator works

A percentage tip is a fraction of the bill. The tip is added to the bill to give the total, and both are divided by the number of people when the group splits the cost. The percentage is applied to the amount you enter, so if the bill already includes tax, the tip is calculated on the taxed amount. Many people prefer to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, which gives a slightly smaller tip; that variation is handled on the separate tip from net price page.

Formula

tip = bill x tip percentage / 100. total = bill + tip. tip per person = tip / people. total per person = total / people.

Worked example

A bill of $50 with an 18 percent tip gives $9.00, for a total of $59.00. Split between two people, each person owes $29.50, of which $4.50 is the tip. A 15 percent tip on the same bill is $7.50 and a total of $57.50.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Either is accepted. Tipping on the pre-tax bill is common because the tax is not service. On a $100 bill with 13 percent tax, the difference between an 18 percent tip on the net and on the gross is $2.34.

What is a normal tip percentage?

Customs vary by country and by service. In Canada and the United States, 15 to 20 percent is typical for table service, with 18 percent a common middle choice. Counter service, takeout and delivery follow different norms, and some countries do not expect a tip at all.

Does the calculator round the total?

No. It keeps full precision and the page only rounds for display. If you want a round total, adjust the tip percentage slightly and the tip will move with it.

How do I split an uneven bill?

This page splits evenly. If people ordered different amounts, calculate each person's tip on their own share and add the results, or use a bill-splitting tool that stores each item.
