How this calculator works
Use the same units for progress and the goal: dollars with dollars, distance with distance, or completed items with planned items. Divide progress by the goal to find completion. The remaining amount is signed so that passing the target remains visible. This model assumes progress starts at zero.
Formula
Completion = progress / goal. Progress = completion × goal. Goal = progress / completion. Remaining = goal - progress.
Worked example
Completing 45 of 60 items gives 75% completion and 15 remaining. If 120 units represent 80% completion, the inferred goal is 150 units.

Frequently asked questions
What if I exceed the goal?
The calculator shows more than 100% completion and a negative remaining amount. For example 110 of 100 is 110%, with -10 remaining.
Can I use a goal that decreases over time?
This page assumes an amount accumulated from zero. For a decreasing measurement, first convert it to progress made towards the total planned reduction.
Why cannot the goal be zero?
Dividing by a zero target gives no defined completion percentage. Choose a positive target in the same units as progress.
