How this calculator works
Scale decimal inputs by the same power of ten to obtain integer coefficients. Long division brings down one digit at a time, records a quotient digit and subtracts the corresponding multiple. The integer quotient truncates toward zero and the remainder has the dividend's sign. The exact fraction describes the full division, including any fractional part.
Formula
a/b = c, with b != 0. Truncated quotient q and remainder r satisfy a = bq + r and |r| < |b|. Reverse modes use a = bc or b = a/c.
Worked example
847 / 7 = 121 with remainder 0. For 22 / 5, the decimal is 4.4, the integer quotient is 4 and the remainder is 2. For -22 / 5, the quotient is -4 and the remainder is -2.

Frequently asked questions
How does this differ from floor division?
For negative ratios this tool truncates toward zero. Floor division rounds toward negative infinity and uses a different remainder convention.
Can I use decimal divisors?
Yes. Scaling both numbers by the same power of ten leaves their ratio unchanged. The remainder is converted back to the original scale.
Why can a missing divisor be unsolvable?
A zero quotient may leave the divisor undetermined or make the equation impossible. A solved divisor must also be non-zero.
