Lateral surface area of a cylinder calculator

Unroll the curved side into a rectangle. Its width is the circumference and its height is the cylinder height. Choose radius, diameter or a reverse area calculation.

How this calculator works

A vertical cut through the side lets a right cylinder flatten into a rectangle. Multiplying its circumference by its height gives the curved area. This relationship also recovers height or radius from a known area. The cap table adds complete circular ends without counting seams, material thickness or overlapping joints.

Formula

L=2πrh=πdh; h=L/(2πr); r=L/(2πh); flat width=2πr; area with n end caps=L+nπr².

Worked example

A radius of 3 m and height of 5 m give a rectangle 6π m wide and 5 m high. Its area is 30π m². Adding one cap gives 39π m², and adding both gives 48π m².

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter a diameter instead?

Yes. Choose diameter and height. The diameter is halved before the area is calculated.

Why is a pipe wall thickness absent?

This is an ideal single surface. A thick pipe has distinct inner and outer cylindrical areas.

How much extra material should I add for a seam?

The result is the exact geometric rectangle. Add your chosen seam width or overlap separately based on the construction method.
