How this calculator works
A closed cylinder’s volume is the area of its circular base times the height. The total surface area adds the two circular caps to the rolled rectangular wall, whose unrolled length is the circumference. Negative measurements are rejected; a zero radius or height gives zero volume.
Formula
V = πr²h; Total surface area = 2πr(r + h).
Worked example
A cylinder with radius 3 and height 5 has V = π × 9 × 5 ≈ 141.372 and surface area 2π × 3 × 8 ≈ 150.796. With radius 2 and height 7, V ≈ 87.965 and the surface area is ≈ 113.097.

Frequently asked questions
Does this include the caps?
Yes, the surface area is the total for a closed cylinder: both circular ends plus the wall. Only the smooth wall would be 2πrh.
What units are the results in?
Inputs are converted to metres for calculation, and you can choose metric or imperial result units beside the volume and surface area.
How do I find the volume of a pipe or tube?
This page measures a solid cylinder. For a hollow pipe, subtract the inner cylinder volume from the outer one, using the same length and each radius.
