How this calculator works

The DRI fibre AI was derived using 14 g per 1000 kcal of usual energy intake. This page shows that energy-based amount alongside the published life-stage AI. They can differ because the table uses reference population energy intakes. The reference profile is separate from the optional energy-estimation profile so the two calculations stay explicit. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

Energy-based fibre (g/day) = 14 x daily kcal / 1000. Published AIs include 38 g for men aged 19 to 50 and 25 g for women aged 19 to 50.

Worked example

At 2000 kcal/day, the energy-based value is 28 g/day. At 2500 kcal/day it is 35 g/day.

Frequently asked questions

Is more always better?

No. Tolerance, fluid intake and digestive conditions affect suitable intake.

Why is there no infant result?

The DRI tables do not establish a total-fibre AI for infants.

Does the AI include supplements?

Total fibre includes dietary and functional fibre; fibre-rich foods also provide other nutrients.
