How this calculator works
Use the original WHO form in Sources to administer all ten items, then transfer each coded score here. The first eight items allow 0 through 4; the final two allow only 0, 2 or 4. Items 1 to 3 concern consumption, 4 to 6 dependence symptoms, and 7 to 10 consequences. Follow the form's skip instructions: a zero on item 1 skips items 2 to 8, but items 9 and 10 still matter. The calculator totals exactly what you enter rather than overwriting a completed form. The WHO reference drink is 10 g of ethanol; national adaptations may differ. No score by itself diagnoses alcohol use disorder. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
AUDIT = sum of items 1 through 10, range 0 to 40. Consumption = Q1 + Q2 + Q3; dependence = Q4 + Q5 + Q6; harm = Q7 + Q8 + Q9 + Q10.
Worked example
Scores 2, 1, 2, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 2, 0 total 9: consumption 5, dependence 1, harm 3. Ten maximum responses total 40.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the questions?
Open the original WHO manual in Sources, including its self-report form. This page is an arithmetic companion, not a rewritten or independently validated questionnaire.
Does a low total exclude a problem?
No. Particular responses, medical history and clinical judgement can matter even when the total is low. Pregnancy, age and national practice also affect interpretation.
Why are there no diagnostic bands?
The original score is continuous. Screening thresholds depend on purpose and population; a qualified clinician should interpret the completed instrument rather than infer a diagnosis from a colour or label.
