How this calculator works
Divide the total price or monthly rent by floor area expressed in square foot units. The area input can use metric or imperial units; it is converted before comparison. Use the same measurement convention and the same time period for every property. The comparison table is descriptive and makes no adjustment for location or condition.
Formula
Price per square foot = total price / floor area in square foot units. Total price = unit price × area. Area = total price / unit price. One square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square metres.
Worked example
A $600,000 home with 2,000 square feet has a price of $300 per square foot. A $750,000 home with 2,500 square feet has the same unit price.

Frequently asked questions
Can I compare rent?
Yes. Use monthly rents for every row and interpret the result as monthly rent per unit of floor area.
Should I include garages and unfinished space?
Use the same definition for every property. Different listing standards can make otherwise similar unit prices misleading.
Does a lower unit price mean better value?
It is one comparison measure. Location, usable layout, condition, fees and land value can dominate the difference.
