How this calculator works
Estimate shares available for public trading by removing restricted and other strategic holdings from outstanding shares. The two excluded groups must be disjoint: do not count the same holding twice. Free float percentage is float divided by outstanding shares. Actual index providers apply their own detailed ownership rules.
Formula
Free float = outstanding - restricted - other closely held shares. Float percentage = free float / outstanding × 100%.
Worked example
One million outstanding shares less 100,000 restricted and 200,000 other closely held shares leaves 700,000, or 70%, free float. With 500,000 outstanding and no exclusions, float is 500,000, or 100%.

Frequently asked questions
Should the same shares appear in both exclusions?
No. Enter restricted holdings once and put only additional non-public holdings in the closely held group.
Are authorized shares outstanding shares?
No. Authorized shares are a legal ceiling and may never have been issued.
Does this reproduce an index inclusion factor?
It provides a simple share count. An index may use ownership thresholds, foreign ownership limits and rounding conventions.
