How this calculator works

An exit is the last pageview before a visitor leaves the site. Each visit has exactly one exit, so only the final page of a session counts. Exit rate divides the times a page was the last page viewed by the total pageviews of that page. It is not the same as bounce rate: a visitor may read three pages and leave from the fourth, which counts as an exit but not a bounce. A high exit rate on a checkout confirmation page is expected; on a key landing page it may signal a problem.

Formula

Exit rate = exits / pageviews × 100. Continuing pageviews = pageviews - exits.

Worked example

A page with 100,000 pageviews and 35,000 exits has an exit rate of 35%. The other 65,000 pageviews continued to another page.

Frequently asked questions

How is exit rate different from bounce rate?

Bounce rate counts visits that viewed only one page. Exit rate counts sessions that ended on the page, regardless of how many pages were seen before. A page can have a low bounce rate and a high exit rate if visitors reach it late in a journey.

What is a good exit rate?

It depends on the page. Confirmation and thank-you pages typically have very high exit rates because the journey ends there. Compare a page with its own history and with the role it plays, not with an arbitrary benchmark.

Does one visit create one exit?

Yes, each session has exactly one exit, so total exits across all pages equal total sessions. Individual page exit rates therefore vary with how often that page is the last stop.
