How this calculator works
Estimate the return common shareholders require using either market-risk exposure or a constant-growth dividend model. CAPM uses a risk-free return, market return and beta. The dividend method uses the next annual dividend, today's price and a perpetual growth assumption; it needs a stable dividend policy and required return above growth.
Formula
CAPM: ke = rf + beta × (rm - rf). Dividend growth: ke = D1 / price + g, where D1 is the next annual dividend rather than the dividend just paid.
Worked example
A $2 next dividend, $40 share price and 3% growth imply 8% cost of equity. CAPM with 3% risk-free return, 8% market return and beta 1.2 implies 9%.

Frequently asked questions
Can a company without dividends use this?
Yes. Use CAPM. The dividend method depends on a meaningful recurring dividend and sustainable growth assumption.
Should I enter last year's dividend?
The dividend method takes next year's expected payment. Grow the last annual dividend by one year first if appropriate.
Will the two methods agree?
They need not. They rely on different inputs and assumptions, so disagreement can help identify sensitive estimates.
